In DC motors, a commutator provides electric current to the armature coils. It is made up of mica rings, copper segments and brushes that ride up against it to provide the current for the motor. The copper segments are insulated from each other with mica segments and the copper segments are stamped to precise tolerances. A commutator is an electrical switch that periodically reverses the current in an electric motor or electrical generator. Commutators enable motors to run on and generators to produce direct current instead of alternating current. More generally, commutators can be used to convert between direct and alternating current.
